A Day in the Life: Visiting High Schools

A Day in the Life: Visiting High Schools

Hello world! As a new member of the web log team, we am so excited to share with you numerous of my day-to-day experiences as an Assistant Director of Admission at USC. When I talk to my friends and household about my job, they frequently ask questions like ‘what do you do on an everyday foundation?’ or ‘do you have to work in the summer?’ i am hoping that through my monthly improvements to this web log, you’ll get a much better concept of what we do each and every day as admission counselors.

So let’s focus on the present. This i woke up at the Courtyard Marriott in Vienna, VA morning. My visit that is first began 7:45 am. That may appear early to some, reasonable to others, but we can let you know, this at 7:45 have always been, I was tired (7:45 am in VA feels like 3:45 am in CA…oy. morning) The thing is, my flight from Los Angeles was likely to arrive at Reagan National Airport at 3:43 pm yesterday (become exact.) But instead, due to a wet cockpit seat (I kid you maybe not,) my journey was delayed three hours. Luckily, my very first school see this morning constantly has coffee waiting I was especially appreciative today (Thanks Sheila! for me, and) I visit, at this school it’s a different format which consists mostly of me answering questions although I usually give about a 30 minute presentation to students when. Thankfully the learning students came prepared. They asked great questions and I think I only stuttered a times that are few.

I had time to kill before my second visit and luckily found a Peet’s Coffee on my way. We stopped for many break fast and a coffee refill. In a world that is perfect arrive about 10 mins just before a visit, but often I’m about 15 to 20 minutes early. Thankfully, my car’s air conditioning kept me cool while I consumed my bagel and drank my latte. I was also able to chat with some counselors which is always a highlight of my day today. University counselors are always saturated in details about students, their schools, and usually life in general. It also reminds me of my high school times where I invested a complete lot of time on my counselor’s couch.

Just How numerous coffee cups are you able to find in this photo?

My visit that is third today to a school i have never checked out prior to. There were about eight students present and one ended up being even using a USC t-shirt. This student, let us call him Brandon, said about his recent trip to campus so we had a moment to gush over how pretty USC is. I really like sharing common USC experiences with students, particularly whenever i am abroad.

Finally, between my third and fourth see this early morning, I was in a position to grab a 6′ veggie delight as I drove to the following senior school. Upon checking in, my picture from last year’s visit appeared in their computer, a good reminder of the relationships I continue to create at each college.

After my fifth and visit that is final, we returned to my hotel, debriefed my day in the shape of records and headed to the closest Starbucks to catch through to some work. My first instinct is definitely to test my email. Oh look! I got an email from Brandon I mentioned thanking me for my visit and asking a question about something. Love when that occurs!

I hope to meet many of you as We carry on my travels! If there’s other things you intend to know about our experiences visiting your senior high school, please feel free to leave questions within the comment section and I am going to do my best to return to you quickly!

Fight On!

Mythbuster: I need certainly to show the admission counselors that USC is my top choice

The Myth: Attending college fairs, visits and tours will increase my likelihood of admission.

The Verdict: Not at USC.

Every August that is late/early, you can find 5 or so emails in my inbox each and every morning with all the topic ‘Introduction to USC.’ These emails usually have a similar format that is general. ‘Hello Jessica- just wished to inform you that I go to ABC senior school, we play baseball and I also can’t wait to apply to USC. I have always wished to be considered a learning pupil in the Marshall School of Business.’ Ok great, but what am we supposed to state? Good fortune with your baseball period? Every winter, I get comparable emails with the subject ‘Update.’ Students tell me personally how their first semester went, they got the role that is lead the spring musical, and that USC continues to be their first option. Awesome, but chances are I currently saw your senior year grades (or will soon).

At USC, we do not track students’s interest outside for the actual application for admission choice purposes. Going to our programs is a wonderful solution to find out more about USC, but going to an event or sending e-mails like those I described will not raise your chances of admission to the college.

As admission counselors, its true that individuals are your main contact as you have the admission process at USC so we are content to work with you with any assist you to might need. However, pupils just benefit from reaching out to us they can’t find the answer online if they have specific questions- especially questions to which. I think pupils often confuse this role and make the assumption they have to e-mail us and initiate a conversation in order to have a shot at admission.

So how do you show us which you’re thinking about USC? rather than investing your time emailing us with updates, it is in your absolute best interest to make use of that time shmoop writing paper service to the office on your reaction to the application question ‘Describe your academic interest and exactly how you plan to pursue them at USC.’ You should discuss specific resources and opportunities you want to take advantage of at USC. instead of emailing us your list of activities, fill the activity Summary out thoroughly. A thoughtful and carefully assembled application stands out much more than an introduction email or an invitation to coffee.

Bear in mind that some educational schools may monitor demonstrated interest. Some colleges may expect all students to reach out to them, while other people may expect students within the area that is local see campus. The notion of demonstrated interest differs, if it is factored into an admission decision so you should always ask a school if and how they track interest and.

By the end of the day, we do wish to see that you’re thinking about USC and that you will be really considering being a student here. The best way so that you can articulate this interest is throughout your application.
